Larry Paxton’s Custom Leather Bass Strap

This past 4th of July night, I ran into an old friend in my hometown after the fireworks display. Larry Paxton comes home to our small Ohio town every Fourth to watch the parade. Years ago, he relocated to Nashville where he and his wife are both “first call” musicians in the recording industry.

Larry told me he still uses the bass strap I made for him in 1977! It’s still in great shape and he uses it all the time. I made his custom strap while we both lived in Los Angeles. Larry is a very highly regarded session guitar & bass player and arranger.

I plan to take him up on his invitation to pay him a visit in Nashville. I’ll meet potential custom leather clients and I can renew old acquaintances with the ones I already know! There are probably more than a few musicians looking for a special, one-of-a-kind leather accessory that will reflect their own personal style, built to last a lifetime.

  1. I loved reading this post…I remember seeing ads in the Youngstown Vindicator for Brainchild, but I was too young to get into any clubs.
I do agree with a visit to Nashville…lots of musicians down here who could use some of your artistry, Brennan. Hope to see you in Music City soon.

    1. Hi Kirsti,
You found me! I hope you got to see “Brainchild” at least once when you were a kid! Larry & company put on a great show. I’ll be coming to Nashville before you know it!

    2. Hi Kirsti, I’ve never met you, but I looked at your website and wanted to say “Kudos” for what you do. I built a home music studio and have recorded a few young ladies locally in hopes to inspire and foster their musical and vocal talents. It’s a great feeling to witness the transition of a young artist from “wanna be” to “can be” with just a little help, and it sounds like that is exactly what you do. 🙂 Are you originally from the Youngstown area?

  2. I love this post! Larry Paxton was part of the band called Brainchild (http://www.brainchildreunion.com/bandbios/bios-larrypaxton.html). I have very fond memories of seeing this band in high school. I think they may even have played a gig at Mooney’s auditorium once. I’d love to meet Larry one day, and I’m not surprised that he still uses your leather strap. I have several articles of yours made long ago that are still as robust as the day I received them.

    1. Hey Tim,
I’d love to introduce you guys! When Larry finds out that you were the program manager in charge of bringing the next high-end generation of Lionel Trains “VISION” to fruition, he’ll freak. You guys can probably talk guitars and model trains for days! It’s great to be back in touch. Don’t forget to condition that leather every two months or so!

      1. Hey Brennan! Yeah, it’s been great to connect. I have no idea on the right way to condition leather. Perhaps another blog post on that subject would be helpful. 🙂
